Course InformationThis page includes everything you need to know to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident before attending your Sport Medicine Council of Alberta (SMCA) course. Please review the information below carefully before your course date. |
Course ScheduleHow long are SMCA courses? Approximately 8 hours per day. |
Course LocationWhere are SMCA courses held? Percy Page Centre |
Room LocationWhat room is the course being held in? Room #8 |
Accessing the BuildingWhich parking lot and entrance should I use? Please park in the south-side parking lot and enter through the south-side doors. The main doors on the north side of the building will be locked and you will not be able to enter through them. Parking Note: The parking lot may be signed "Staff Only", but SMCA course participants can park there. You will not be ticketed or towed. Do I need to sign in with security? Yes! Once you enter through the south doors, you will be required to sign in with security. They will ask you to record:
What if security is not at the desk when I arrive? If security is not at the desk, call 780-903-5702 and let them know you are trying to access the Percy Page Centre. Important Reminder: Please sign out when you leave the building (for example lunch break or end of day) and repeat the sign-in process when you return. Weekend Note: SMCA staff are not on site for weekend courses and are not reachable by phoning the office. Email is the best form of contact, but we cannot guarantee that a staff member will be able to get back to you in a timely manner on weekends. |
What to WearWhat should I wear to the course? Athletic or activewear is strongly recommended. Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably throughout the day, such as leggings, track pants, or athletic pants. For hands-on portions of the course, please bring shorts or compression shorts to change into. This allows you to fully participate in taping techniques for the ankle and knee, as well as wrapping techniques for the thigh and groin. SMCA understands and respects that cultural or religious considerations may influence attire choices. Participants are encouraged to wear clothing that aligns with their beliefs while still allowing for safe and effective participation in practical activities. |
Footwear & Foot HealthWhat footwear should I bring, and will I be barefoot? For ankle taping practice, participants will be working with bare feet and ankles. Please plan accordingly. We recommend:
Foot and Skin Health Reminder: Please do not attend if you have an active or contagious foot or skin condition that could spread during close-contact practice (for example active infections, athlete’s foot, plantar warts, or open/draining sores on the feet or ankles). If you are unsure, contact SMCA before the course so we can discuss safe participation options. |
What to BringDo I need to bring anything with me? Please plan to bring:
Please note that there are no water fountains available in the building. |
Lunch BreakIs there a lunch break during the course? Yes. The course will break for lunch around noon for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. You may bring a bagged lunch, or there are restaurants nearby (for example Tim Hortons, Subway, etc.). A fridge and microwave are available, however they are located in a shared space and SMCA is not responsible for cleaning, maintenance, or upkeep of the lunchroom or appliances. As a result, we cannot guarantee their cleanliness or condition at any given time. Please take appropriate precautions (especially for allergies) and use what you feel comfortable with. |
Allergen AwarenessAre there any food restrictions I should be aware of? Yes. As a precaution, SMCA courses follow a nut-aware approach. Please do not bring foods containing peanuts or tree nuts (or obvious nut products like nut butters) into the course space. We recognize not every course will have someone with a nut allergy, but we use this approach to reduce risk and help keep the learning environment safe for everyone. SMCA cannot guarantee the building is allergen-free, but we ask participants to help reduce avoidable exposure within the course space. |
Fragrance-Free Environment & Personal HygieneAre SMCA courses fragrance-free? Yes. SMCA courses are fragrance-free to support participants with allergies and sensitivities. Because many activities involve hands-on partner work in close proximity for extended periods, please avoid strongly scented products (perfume, cologne, body spray, heavily scented lotions, hair products, or essential oils). Personal comfort during close-contact activities: Our courses include extended hands-on partner work. To help maintain a comfortable learning environment for everyone, please arrive in freshly laundered clothing and consider using deodorant or antiperspirant (preferably unscented). Please also be mindful of lingering odors (for example smoke) on clothing or outerwear, as some participants are sensitive. If an odor or scent concern is affecting the learning environment, SMCA may address it discreetly and may suggest a brief break or other reasonable adjustment to support participant comfort and safety. |
